Floppy Kid Syndrome

Floppy kid syndrome is a collection of disorders that may result in weak, recumbent, depressed and or dead kids. Hypothermia, hypoglycemia, dehydration, acidosis, sepsis, and diarrhea with acidosis and electrolyte changes are the most common causes. Affected kids are typically born healthy but become weak at 3-10 days of age and progress to being recumbent and non responsive. Nutritional support, warming, and correcting dehydration and electrolyte changes are the core treatments. Positive response to 1/2 teaspoon of oral sodium bicarbonate is considered diagnostic for this condition. Electrolyte treatment is critical if diarrhea is involved. If animals show signs of sepsis (fever, evidence of infection of navel, eyes, or joints) antibiotics are indicated. If no improvement is seen in 12-24 hours, contact your veterinarian, sooner if animals are unresponsive.
